New Single From Jazz Trumpeter And Singer Matt Von Roderick

by Soraya Alcalá
Matt Von Roderick

Matt Von Roderick, the innovative trumpeter/vocalist, releases “Signs,” the first single and video from upcoming album THE PERFECT STORM, set to come out via Flatiron Recordings later this year.

Von Roderick says of the first single “Signs” that it “is about transcending ego/internal conflict and ultimately finding and claiming one’s own power and self-determinism.

We’re also very excited to share a striking music video for “Signs” — we feel like we were able to do something cutting-edge in the world of jazz, and it really brings the song to life.”

THE PERFECT STORM is Von Roderick’s first album since 2023’s Celestial Heart. Unlike that album, THE PERFECT STORM is made up of mostly original songs with an exception being a stunning cover of the Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize.” The new album has songs produced by Nathaniel Schellin and Christopher Martin, Grammy-nominated Daniel Mendez Garibay, and Kenneth Burgomaster. Backing Von Roderick on the album are musicians Nolan Ericsson (guitar), Kenneth Burgomaster (piano), Matt Clohesy (bass) and Peter Retzlaff (drums).

Inhabiting the rarified air of innovative jazz trumpeter and heart-centered crooner, Matt Von Roderick has been hailed as “a post-millennial Chet Baker” by the New York Times and «a top-drawer trumpeter who also sings like an angel obscured by a storm cloud” by JazzTimes Magazine.

Recognized recently for his unique, innovative interpretations of standards and the American songbook, critically acclaimed jazz trumpeter and singer Matt Von Roderick reveals another side of his artistic expression — THE PERFECT STORM, an album comprised largely of original compositions spanning across several years, and his boldest, most personal statement to-date.

Von Roderick’s uplifting message and poignant sound have been featured among the world’s most celebrated venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. If you can imagine a one-of-a-kind trumpet virtuosity paired with dreamy vocals, deeply authentic jazz roots and soaring soundscapes, you’re beginning to conjure the artistry of Matt Von Roderick.

Throughout his multifaceted career, Von Roderick has worked with some of the most respected names in jazz and beyond, including Brad Mehldau, Neil Diamond, Dionne Warwick and The Saturday Night Live Band. Von Roderick and his clarion tone have appeared in numerous film and television spots, as well as at events with best-selling author Marianne Williamson. Matt is grateful to have received a myriad of awards for his music, including being named the 1st place winner of The Independent Music Awards Jazz Category as judged by the late progressive Rock icon Lou Reed, awarded as finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, and was a recipient of the Vilar Global Fellowship, dubbed the «Rhodes Scholarship» of the performing arts by The New York Times.

Von Roderick’s signature sound often combines his classic, lush tones with adventurous vocal/trumpet multiphonics, a dash of loops and contemporary spoken word to create what the International Trumpet Guild calls “exquisite”, while Downbeat Magazine describes his musical approach as being “Zen-like”.

Matt Von Roderick prioritizes the spiritual aspects of music and genuinely loves his audiences — he seeks to make a positive impact in the world, and it is his great joy to bring you joy.

Previewing the new album, Von Roderick will play a show via Live Nation at The Peppermint Club in West Hollywood on May 18.
