Venezuelan singer-songwriter JOAQUINA once again demonstrates why she has been hailed as one of Latin Pop’s most gifted young artists with the release of her new single “amarillo” (’yellow’). Another thoughtful song that speaks to her generation of fans, “amarillo” is inspired by the true story of a friend’s moment of clarity, when she recognized that a long-term relationship could not continue due to diverging individual dreams for the future.
«I wrote this song about a friend’s love story… We were talking in the kitchen after she had just broken up with her partner, and I thought she looked great. But why? They had been together for three years. What happened? And she explained to me that she had already mourned the relationship while she was still in it. My friend had realized that she and the other person were totally different. They had different points of view, they wanted different things for their lives; she was always very ambitious, she had different plans for her future and her career, and her partner never really understood that. In the end, she had to accept it and understand that everything falls into place on its own.» – Joaquina
Through satirical and honest lyrics, JOAQUINA puts into words that painful but liberating acceptance: «I’m not what you always wanted, I have slightly bigger dreams.
» The song does not focus on resentment, but on the maturity of understanding that it may not be enough to love someone if you are not going in the same direction. The song release has been heavily anticipated by fans for months, as it has already become a live favorite from performances during Joaquina’s ‘al romper la burbuja’ tour dates.
“amarillo” also marks Joaquina’s first new song release since the arrival of her highly praised breakout debut album ‘al romper la burbuja.’ Released in late January, the prolific album of 14 songs grounded in a young woman’s innermost observations of her world (with themes of coming of age, personal evolution, separation from family & much more), was quickly embraced by JOAQUINA’s fast-growing global fan base.
The Latin music community of other artists, and press have warmly embraced the album – both with multiple recent picks as “one of the Best Latin Albums of the Year So Far,” and quickly followed by recommendations that the album merits strong consideration for a Latin GRAMMY “Album of the Year’ nomination.
Fans are sure to notice that the release of “amarillo” is also accompanied by a very noticeable breaking tradition music video, as it dramatically injects the title’s bright yellow hue into JOAQUINA‘s signature blue and red visual palette used throughout the ‘al romper la burbuja’ releases. Look for “amarillo” to continue being a staple of JOAQUINA’s live set as she begins a series of dates with Sebastian Yatra in Spain throughout September.
JOAQUINA, is a rising talent emerging from the Art House – Universal Music Latino program and the first graduate to win a Latin GRAMMY. A collaboration between Abbey Road Studios and Art House Academy—a school dedicated to music performance, production, and sound engineering—this initiative was created to nurture and develop the next generation of artists. The program culminated in a groundbreaking showcase, conceived by multi-GRAMMY-winning producer Julio Reyes Copello, which introduced a new wave of promising musical talent.
