Relampagos Executive Producer on YouTube Original Recipe For Change Working to Stop Asian Hate Premiering on June 16th
The pressures and complexities of the world continue to evolve and emphasize a burden that we carry with us not only physically but arguably more important, encumber our mental well-being. Filipino-American television executive producer and mental health advocate, Joel Relampagos, is using his own personal experience and the overwhelming need of many for access to mental healthcare to provide an all-encompassing free platform, Change Your Algorithm.
After enduring battles with depression, anxiety and alcohol addiction while building a career in Hollywood, Joel made the decision to seek help and voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation center in California. It was there during his treatment that he gained a new-found appreciation for therapy and mental health services. Drawing on his experiences, Joel, alongside a roster of certified therapists and other mental health professionals, created Change Your Algorithm, a free online resource for those searching for help. The program quickly gained attention around the globe, due in part to the uncertainty and isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to partnerships with Silicon Valley education technology company, Chegg, and Ameriprise Financial Firm. Joel also hosts a video series, Breaking the Stigma, in partnership with Chegg, where he interviews everyday students to discuss their struggles with mental health.
»My goal is to normalize mental health and break the stigma that goes with it. We have all been through a lot and I believe we each are recovering from something whether it’s a pandemic, loss, racism, trauma – you name it. We openly talk about working out and taking care of our bodies and I want that same openness to apply to our thoughts and emotions. The mind is just as important so the more we talk about our mental health, the less people will feel so alone.» – Joel Relampagos
